Xbox 360 RROD - Which Xbox 360 Red Ring Of Death Fix Is Best?
Well after I started trying to find a repair for my Xbox 360 RROD, I became overwhelmed by the different information available. You can find a million sites, each selling their instruction manuals (usually $24.95. You can get some for free) and there are the multitudes of YouTube videos claiming to have located the miracle remedy. The 3 that I will review are what seems to be typically the most popular (and many times most ridiculous).
Number #1 - The Towel Trick - It goes something similar to this: You take the hard drive off, wrap the entire device in a towel to stop the surplus heat from escaping, turn the console on for approximately 15 minutes to cook (some instructions recommend an hour), shut it down, unplug it for an hour, plug it back in and like magic it works. But why? I have not heard a decent explanation yet. Here is one of the answers..."the machine gets so sizzling hot that it melts the solder that was cracking to the trigger the red lights to start with"..... Listed here are a couple of probable hazards as brought up in the same information "could possibly damage other parts of the Xbox".... "The machine could catch on fire it gets so hot". I must say I will rate this as the 2nd most absurd Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death fix from the three in consideration. Recommendation: Do not use this repair.
Number #2 - The Ice Bath - I wouldn't even wish to explain how to do this. Basically, a rubbermaid tub is full of ice water, some vinegar is added, the Xbox 360 is unplugged and submerged in water/vinegar mixture. After so many minutes the console is removed, drained of water and immediately plugged back in. Need I say more. I actually got word of a kid who attempted this and was severely shocked. This as a great number of other fixes was presented as a youtube video. Really it is quite irresponsible and really should be removed. This fix is easily the most ridiculous fix of the three in consideration. Advice: Never even take into consideration using this repair should you value your life.
Number #3 - X-Clamp Repair - This is the only genuine repair I've found thus far. It truly is as permanent as it gets. Don't use it however if your Xbox 360 is still under warranty. Send the console back to Microsoft and let them honor the warranty. Having said that, if the seal is broken and/or it's not under warranty this repair is the best option. Here is the fix in summary; you open up the console, remove the x-clamps, clean the old thermal paste, put fresh thermal paste on, exchange the x-clamps using screws and washers, reassemble the unit, overheat, allow it cool down and it works on approximately 90% of the units. Advice: Use this Xbox 360 3 Red Light Error fix.
